   Canada Mission Trip

This summer I had the privilege of joining the TRCC campus ministry on a mission trip to Canada.  From May 23-June 6 my team and I traveled within Northern Ontario, it’s a large providence in Canada, with the goal/mission to reach out to the First Nations people of Canada.  The First Nations’ live on Indian Reserves and some live in the city of Thunder Bay.  While we were there we lived in both locations.

<pictures on their way>

The picture above of the drum is the entrance to Grassy Narrows, the Indian Reserve we lived at for a week.  Grassy Narrows is an hour in driving time away from a highway, so it is very much secluded and to itself.  The people who live on the reserve are all First Nations people – except for Pastor Paul and his wife Kim.  Pastor Paul and Kim (pictured above) are missionaries from South Korea (Paul and Kim are their English names).  English is their second language, Korean being their first, but they still use their broken-English to speak to the Natives.  The older natives speak their native-tongue, Ojibwe (the writing on the drum picture is Ojibwe).  But most of the Natives know some English and the children primarily speak English.

Our mission while at Grassy Narrows was to help Pastor Paul and Kim with the work they do at their church at Grassy.  We did a lot of service projects because their were twenty-two of us there to work.  While there we painted their church (see the picture above of their church after being painted), organized the inside of the church, painted the inside of the reserves Complex (it’s like a youth center to us), and helped in church service on Sunday.

 Also while there we had two evenings that we invited the children of Grassy Narrows to come for a movie night and supper night at the church.  I enjoyed getting to play with the children and get to know them.  We made beaded key chains with the children one evening that told the story of Jesus (black bead representing sin, red was Jesus blood, white is being pure when you accept Jesus blood to erase your sin, green representing growth and your relationship with Jesus, and yellow representing being in Heaven one day eternally with Jesus).  The children loved this activity and all wanted to know what the different colors stood for – it was a great way to share Jesus with them!

The second week of the mission trip was spent in Thunder Bay.  While there my team and I volunteered at Grace Place and Eagles Cry; both volunteer-ran places that serve meals to people who come in off the streets.  I was blessed by the dedication of the regular volunteers and their desire to see salvations of the people who come through their doors.

Other adventures while in Northern Ontario were hiking up Mt. McKay (we prayed over Thunder Bay once at top of mountain - see above picture), seeing Kakabeca Falls, and visiting the Cascades in a park at Thunder Bay.  Also, my team and I saw a total of two black bear and moose while in Canada!  I enjoyed seeing the many different beautiful works of art God has made!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Canada and want to thank God for the experience.  If you have any questions about my experience while in Canada, feel free to email me your questions at info@dcmliferadio.org.
